Get Ready, Stay Alert, Complete the Mission: Living as a Soldier in God's Army

We are not simply called to attend church and speak Christian words. We are called to bear fruit, complete our mission, and finish strong. This is a message about three things every believer needs to embrace: getting ready, staying alert, and completing the mission God has placed before them.

Why Does God Want Your Heart Before He Uses Your Hands?

Before God can use you in the mission He has for your life, He wants your heart. That is where everything begins.

Ephesians 5:14 says it plainly: "Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light." We are called to wake up. The enemy does not always need to make you deny God outright. Sometimes he just needs to keep you asleep.

When Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane, He told His disciples to pray so they would not enter into temptation. The temptation was not just outright sin. It was the pull to put other priorities ahead of Him. Staying awake spiritually means keeping God first.

Does God Really Want a Personal Relationship With You?

Yes. And the depth of that desire might surprise you.

God is not some distant, unreachable force. He is a God who is, in a very real sense, obsessed with getting you alone. He wants intimacy. He wants fellowship. He wants one-on-one time with you.

King David understood this long before many of us do. He wrote in Psalm 5:3, "My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You." And in Psalm 63:1, "O God, You are my God; early will I seek You."

David was a man after God's own heart. And what did that look like practically? He sought God early. He sought God alone. Out on the backside of a field, taking care of sheep, he built that intimacy. And when the lion came, when the bear came, when Goliath showed up, he had the battle part ready because the intimacy part was already in place.

How Does God Speak to Us Today?

God speaks. He communicates through the Holy Spirit who lives inside every believer.

John 16:13 says, "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come."

The closer you get to God, the clearer His voice becomes. Prayer is not just a religious exercise. It is communication with the One who gives you orders, who directs your steps, and who will show you things to come.

We have an unction from the Holy One. God wants to speak into your life. But that requires time with Him, not just in a church service, but alone, in the quiet, seeking His face.

How Do You Prepare for Spiritual Battle Every Day?

You put on the armor. Every single day.

Ephesians 6:11 says, "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." And Ephesians 5:18 adds, "Be filled with the Spirit." Being filled is not a one-time event. We leak. We need more. We need to be continually filled.

You do not put on the armor when the battle starts. You put it on when you wake up, before you walk out the door, before the firefight begins. Because there will be a firefight. The enemy will make sure of it.

When you spend time with God in prayer and in His Word, something begins to flow. The fruit of the Spirit starts to bubble up. The bad attitude softens. The reaction in traffic changes. Why? Because you are no longer running on your own flesh. You are running on His fuel.

What Is the Enemy's Most Effective Strategy Against Believers?

He does not always need to destroy you. He just needs to distract you.

The enemy's goal is to pull you away from your assignment. And here is something worth writing down: distractions are really just idols in disguise.

Not every distraction looks sinful. Some look completely legitimate. Some are entertaining. Some are even good things. But if they are pulling you away from your time with God and your God-given purpose, they are doing the enemy's work.

1 Peter 5:8 warns us, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." He is looking for your guard to be down. He is looking for you to drift, even just a little.

Can a Small Distraction Really Lead to Bondage?

Yes. A distraction that is entertained long enough can become a stronghold.

Ephesians 4:27 says, "Nor give place to the devil." Do not give him a foothold. Because what you tolerate begins to govern you.

The story of King Saul is a sobering example. God gave Saul specific instructions. He did not follow them completely. He left one thing standing that God said to remove. And the consequences of that partial obedience rippled through generations. We see it hundreds of years later in the story of Esther.

Distractions, compromise, temptation, offense, pride, discouragement, and even busyness can all knock us out of position. Martha was busy while Mary sat at Jesus' feet. Busyness is not the same as faithfulness.

Why Does It Matter Whether You Complete Your Mission?

Because someone is depending on you to be where God has placed you.

Esther 4:14 asks the question: "Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" There are people whose lives will be touched only because you showed up, stayed in position, and did what God called you to do.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us that God prepared good works for us before the foundation of the world. He has already placed the provision. He is waiting on us to walk into it.

Acts 20:24 captures the heart of what it means to finish well: "But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."

It is not how you start. It is how you finish.

Are We Rewarded for How We Live After Salvation?

Salvation is by grace. But reward is according to faithfulness.

Romans 14:12 reminds us that we will all give an account before God. 1 Corinthians 3:8 says, "Every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor." And Matthew 6:20 calls us to "lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven."

This is not about earning salvation. Jesus finished that. It is about what we do with the time, the gifts, and the assignments we have been given. Even the small things. The things nobody sees. God sees them. And what God sees, He rewards.

Life Application

This week, choose one specific time each day to get alone with God. Not a church service, not a group setting, but a quiet, intentional moment just between you and Him. Use that time to pray, to listen, and to ask Him what assignment He has placed in front of you right now.

Before you step into your day, put on the armor. Pray through it. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you fresh. And pay attention to what is pulling your focus away from God and from the purpose He has for your life.

Ask yourself these questions:

• What gets my first attention in the morning, and what does that reveal about where my heart really is?

• What distractions in my life might actually be idols in disguise?

• Am I finishing what God has called me to do, or have I drifted from my assignment?

• If I stood before God today and gave an account of my faithfulness, what would that look like?

You were not saved to sleep through your assignment. You were called, equipped, and placed exactly where you are for a reason. Get ready. Stay alert. Complete the mission.
